Bde:  The 51st Ranger Station at XT116698 is under 81mm Mortar attack and small arms fire.

   

Initial log entries contain hourly sit/rep, and reports of patrols leaving ambush sites and arriving back at base camp.  All negative contact.

14 0730 C Co has arrived in position and checking the area (rifle range)
15 0755 Co C 3rd Plat Ldr: in position ready to commence firing.
16 0810 S2 located approx 100 meters from Popular Forces outpost, jeep unit will be about 02 to get going again.
19 0833 S5 reported departing Base Camp at 0833 hrs for Ap Cao Ka to set up MEDCAP operation
20 0845 Bde S3 departed CP for area where training classes for 2/1st Inf are being conducted by 2/14 personnel today.
21 0945 Co C 3rd Plat completed firing, an ARVN unit now has the range
22 0950 S3:  Wire report, triple strand concertina around Bravo Company perimeter completed 16 Aug 66.  Wire completed around new units position 15 Aug 66
24 1010 Co C is going to blow some demolition for practice for classes tomorrow will be blowing at 1020
25 1023 Bn S3 returned to CP from inspecting training classes being conducted by 2/14 Inf for 2/1 Inf
27 1050 Co C 1st Plat: Have a woman on our wire line and she refuses to leave.  What should we do?  Answ:  Find your National Policeman and if she still refuses turn her in to the MPs
29 1310 Lt Davis reported having linked up with Bravo elements and now leaving Base Camp for Rifle Range
33 1410 S3: Informed B Co that it wouldn't be necessary for them to occupy any of C Co bunkers tonight because C Co would be reinforced by two other plats
34 1409 Lt Davis informed S3 that B Co has finished firing at the rifle range as of 1409
36 1440 Capt Palmer wanted to know the number of bunkers completed in the new area and the total number feet of wire laid.  Also when completed.
51 2030 Partol 2 to Arty LNO: Request navigational round.  (action taken)  Arty LNO. Cleared to fire a 200 meter H.O.B. at coord 140490.  Round fired, observed by patrol 2.  End of mission, 2037 hours.
52 2050 Patrol 2 requested fire mission.  Concentration FN 050, coord 15205000 (action taken) Arty LNO.  Requested permission to fire.  Permission denied for FN050.  Requested navigational round 200 meter H.O.B. at coord 150490.  Patrol 2 informed round fired, observed.  End of mission at 2055 hrs.
57 2250 Bde called and asked if we had heard a small arms round go off in our area.  (action taken)  Co C XO said that he did hear a small arms round go off somewhere near Bde Hqs, but it was not from his unit.
59 2310 S-3 Checked with our units on the perimeter regarding small arms round fired.  Our elements did not fire it, however, Co C heard the round go off, and indicated that it may have gone off in or in vic of Bde HHC.

SF camp at TRI BI under heavy 81mm mortar attack.  Fire is continuing.  One side of camp under rifle grenade fire.

Div reported 51st Ranger station at XT116698 under 81mm mortar and SA attack

4 0045 Ref rpt at 0010: Received approx 60 rds of 81 and 60mm mortar and some SA fire; no casualties.  All firing has ceased at this time.  Air Force is not taking area under fire.

28 0730 2/14 Rear received 3 rifle grenades at 2111 hours.  Returned fire, neg results.  Received 1 grenade that landed approx 3 meters from CP bunker.  No casualties
29 0730 4/23 Rear patrol spotted 2 VC at 0003 hrs.  Patrol leader fired two rounds with shotgun.  XT653176.  Returned base at 0244.  Patrol went out at 0645 to check area, neg contact
30 0730 4/23 Rear spotted 3 VC at bunker line.  Bunker 8 engaged with M-79.  Received 3 rds S/A, no casualties.  Results unknown, time 0300 hrs.
41 1555 1/5 B Co, plt size patrol captured 1 VC, 1 Chicom wpn.
42 1722 A/2/14 informed they must make move 18 Aug by convoy in line of Div
