Received SPOT report from G3.  An ARVN OP was overrun by VC at Duc Hoa XS768635.  Undetermined size VC force.  Another ARVN OP was hit at XS786566.

27 0815 From G3:  Effective 15 Oct 66 all newly arrived replacements for Div Units will be trained by the 25th Div repl Det.  Repl arrivals will be processed by Div Repl Det.  Units will be notified of training time.  Does not include arrivals of 14 Oct 66.
28 0835 0830 hrs A/4/9 located at XS565785 house with 3 VC uniforms, house destroyed, uniforms evacuated B/4/9.  Neg contact.
34 0935 B/4/9 loc at 580774 have 6 detainees.  Being interrogated.  Other units remain the same.
39 1015 423 wheeled vehicle loc bridge site - lead vehicle stuck, attempting to extract and continue.
42 1040 4/9 observed what appeared to be the size of an AP mine coord XT668152.  Vietnamese children and cattle in area.  Appears that one of the cattle tripped the explosion.  No cattle or children injured.  Children drove cattle back toward Vin Cu.
43 1045 1st B 6 Visual Recon report 14 Oct 66.  1.  (6) unarmed VCS wearing mixed clothing vic XT698192 running into cover, VC engaged with unobserved Arty.  2.  Unoccupied AAA gun position loc vic XT759153 with trench system connecting.  3.  Unoccupied AAA Gun position with new camouflage loc vic XT639226.  4.  Normal daylight traffic on river (only 2 sampans were observed in section F3)  5.  Improved trench system vic XT706205 running into NW to SE approx 200 meters long.  6.  Sightings made at 2000 to 2300 ft, speed 50-60 knots.
44 1050 A/4/9 loc 567774 loc (1) building, warm rice on stove, 5 trenches around house, all destroyed.  B/4/9 loc 578777, picked up (1) additional detainee, being interrogated.  Neg contact.  3/50 ARVN loc 577767 found (50) 100 lb bags rice, will evacuate.
47 1130 2/14 reports mine field on undetermined size at XT675231, also 41 booby-trapped houses same location.  All being destroyed.
48 1133 Delayed Entry:  1100 hrs Arty observer from 2/14 observed (5) VC under trees vic coord 666239.  Called Arty,  C&C ship of 2/14 rpts (4) VC KIA (Poss).
52 1250 Delayed Entry:  1120 hrs 4/9 called dustoff to Tan An Heliport.  Rpts 1/4 ton overturned on Hwy 4.  No further info at this tmie.
53 1255 FAC rptd approx 12 VC entered house vic XS588812.  Called airstrike & Arty.  Now lifting (1) RVN Ranger Co into area to further check VC sighted appr 1115 hrs.
56 1315 Ref Log 42:  Vietnamese children attempted to pull M-79 round from ground.  Round exploded killing two children.  4/23 Bn XO notifying G5.
57 1315 C/2/14 called Dustoff for litter and walking wounded as result of booby trap at coord 678223.
58 1320 B/4/9 & 1 Co 3/50 RVN closed Ben Luc, total of 9 detainees.
60 1435 3/4 Cav APC hit AT mine vic 683218.  No casualties.  Track will have to be towed in.
61 1444 Ref Item 53:  After air lift of ARVN Recon Plat 3/50 at 1255 hrs, ARVN found 4 VC KIA (BC), 1 VCC, 3 US carbines, med supplies and misc documents.  6 VC KIA (Poss).
62 1440 2/14 loc at 684217, will stay there for the night.
65 1530 Ref Item 47:  2/14 - At XT674232 unit found 4 houses with stick mine fields in and around houses, 3 houses were heavily booby-trapped.  2 tunnels running between houses were full of trip wires.  All were destroyed.
66 1540 Ref Item 57:  2/14 - At XT678223 unit found minefield, 200 meters long on both sides of road.  Consisted of pineapple type hand grenades and new smooth type US hand grenades with trip wires.  Unit destroyed 5, disarmed 3, tripped 1,  Chieu Hoi with 2/14 stated that to the northeast mines become more dense.  VC call this the "Death Area."
67 1610 C/4/9 recd sniper fire from house loc XT675577.  Returned fire with MG & 60mm mortar.  Are going to check house.
70 1730 Ref Item 67:  4/9 - Checked house, did not loc sniper.  After obtaining permission from Dist, destroyed house.  One man was burned with white phosphorous grenade that malfunctioned.
86 2020 G3 passed info from LRRP:  At 1940 they spotted unk number of VC at XT647231 moving south.
88 2050 A/2/14 forbunker line spotted (03) obj at XT663165 moving east.
105 2400 SUMMARY:  1st Bde continued Opns KALIHI (2/14 & 4/23 Inf) and LANIKAI (4/9).  4/9 conducted BUDDY Opn with 3/50 ARVN.  Results of Opn (2) air strikes called on XS588812 after (12) VC were spotted entering house.  (1) Ranger Co helilifted to same loc, 4 VC KIA (BC), (1) VCC captured, (2_ wpns & misc medical supplies, 5,000 lbs rice captured XS5777767 & evac.  2/14 & 3/4 Cav plat encountered a mined and booby-trapped area XT674174.  (9) US WIA resulted from booby-trapped area.  4/23 had neg contact, (2) airstrikes were conducted in support of LANIKAI & (4) for KALIHI.

23   SUMMARY:  Daily briefings were held at 0745 and 1600 and attended by the CO, XO, and Adj.  Bde CO was absent from this HQs from 0945 to 1115 on a visit to Ben Lac.  An inspection of the bunker line at Ann-Margaret was conducted by the Bde XO and SGM.  This HQ supplied shotgunners for G1 on off-post traffic to Tay Ninh and Saigon.  Supplied by 4/9th Inf.  This SQ supplied two interpreters for the 4/9th Inf.  Received 10 casualty reports from 2/14th Inf, all WIA.  This brings total casualties for operation KALIHI to 27.
