A/4/9 patrol (Platoon) at 111815 now at XT692173 surprised 15-30 VC making stakes for punji pits, platoon opened fire on VC with SA and AW fire, VC returned fire with SA and AW.  Patrol trying to tactically deploy, set of (2) booby-traps.  The VC broke contact and withdrew, and put unknown 60mm mortar rds on patrol's position.  Results:  US losses (9) WIA.  5 to 7th Surgical Hosp and 4 returned to unit.  VC losses (4) VC KIA (BC) (1) VC KIA (Poss).  4/9 & 3/4 Cav reaction force dispatched to help A/4/9, patrol returned to base camp 2315.

C/4/9 loc XS752787 rec'd 2 rds sniper fire from vic XS753787.  Neg casualties.  Returned fire with SA, neg results.

32 1130 From G2:  10-Nov-66 6 VC entered Vinh Cu hamlet, conducted canvas of 20 homes, told residents they were not to support PF in hamlet.  VC departed Vinh Cu in direction of Bau Gia, entered from same direction.
33 1145 4/9 loc VC flag on bunker pole at XS752787, questioned 5 male, 15 females.  No results.  Searched houses, loc (1) booby-trapped grenade, destroyed.
75 2400 SUMMARY:  1st Bde continued Opns LANIKAI & KALIHI.  4/9 Inf continued LANIKAI with an S&D BUDDY opn vix XS749781 and a CHECKMATE BUDDY opn vic XS738783 with C/4/9 and elements RF/PF forces.  C/4/9 returned to Cu Chi base by convoy closing at 1535 hrs.  2/14 Inf remained attached to 2nd Bde.  4/23 Inf continued LANIKAI with an S&D BUDDY opn.  Co A with elements 3/50 ARVN moved by RAG boat to vic XS595770 and conducted S&D opn to vic XS610765.  51st ARVN Ranger Bn established blocking position vic XS610765.  Elements returned to their respective bases vic Ben Luc closing at 1025 hrs.  US/ARVN JOC's remain established vic Tan An and Binh Chanh.  Two USAF CAS missions were flown is support of 1st Bde.
