4/23 dustoff completed for (8) WIA.  4/23 fwd patrol returning to base.

Delayed Entry:  A/4/23 fwd report on patrol.  Halfway to ambush site scout dog team alerted patrol.  Area was checked with negative results.  At 162200 Nov 66 patrol leader decided ambush site not suitable because of terrain and took 3 men with hm to find a better location.  Patrol leader found a piece of high ground and left the three men there and started to return to the remainder of the patrol.  Then numerous explosions occurred, probably from claymores and command detonated mines.  Results 1 friendly KIA and 8 friendly WIA.  Dustoff effected at 162400.  1 platoon was sent to position to assist and linkup at 162350.  Debriefing indicated that VC did not fire SA.  One man in platoon reported seeing 5 VC.  Patrol does not claim any VC casualties.  Patrol closed BC 170200.

21 0825 A/4/23 holding (1) VCS at CHECKMATE site XS629788.  Have checked 40 sampans and released all.
23 0915 1st Bde airborne AO observed 15-20 personnel in open rice paddies vic XT737190.  Aircraft received 3 rounds S/A fire from that vic.  Arty requested.  4 VC KIA (BC), 1 VC KIA (Poss).
43 2230 Patrol from 4/23 spotted (5) VC moving north along trail vic XT630144.  Patrol engaging with Arty fire at this time.
49 2400 SUMMARY:  1st Bde continued Opn LANIKAI with 4/23 conducting S&D BUDDY mission in AO.  4/9 Inf conducted local security and ambush patrols in Cu Chi area.  2/14 Inf will conduct and continue LANIKAI with S&D BUDDY Opn in AO I.  4/23 Inf will conduct S&D BUDDY Opn with 3/50 ARVN.  Co C 4/23 Inf conducts S&D opn vic Xom Moi (XT6117).
