Lead elements of 46th ARVN were engaged by an estimated VC squad with AW.  Fire came from XS 754664 and XS 753664.  There was an automatic weapon on each of those coord.  Fire was returned.  No friendly casualties.  Arty was called in for support.

33 1030 From Arty LNO to 33:  1/46 Inf contacted the Arty, fire resulted in 2 VC KIA (Poss) at XS 754664.
34 1035 From 3/4 Cav to S3:  Be advised I have 20 vehicles to be off-loaded at your location, will you have personnel to handle this?  Reply:  S-4 will handle off-loading.
46 1146 Last lift of A Co, ship received fire from house 400 meters west of road junction XS 724678.
51 1200 A Co picked up suspect at XS 726680.  Suspect 26 years old, has papers, but would like to have him questioned.
52 1215 Bn CO to S3 Air:  POW enroute at this time, arrived this location 1219.
53 1217 A Co is receiving sporadic fire at vic XS 729682.  Fire returned.
54 1219 From SMAJ to A Co:  Have seen activity 300 meters west of Crossroad south of E-W road, vic XS 723678.  Will mark with purple smoke in center of mass.
55 1250 From S3 to Saigon Dustoff:  2/14 requested dustoff for two ARVN WIA's which are with elements of 1/46th Inf Regt.  Will come up on 2/14 Inf freq and contact 1/46th Inf (Lovely Umpire 20).
59 1315 From A Co to S3:  Elements found 10-15 bunkers, 3 automatic weapons positions which seem to have been built last night or this morning with overhead cover.  XS 781681.
61 1350 A Co to S3:  A Co location XS 725678 sending out saturation patrols.  Also found some torn VC clothing and some tax receipts.
64 1445 1/46 to S3:  Advisor reports receiving sniper fire XS 746662.  Returning fire with SA.
66 1600 Lead Elements 1/46th ARVN:  Elements of 1/46th Inf detonated a booby-trap coord XS 737674, resulted in 3 WIA (2 litter, 1 ambulatory), dustoff requested.  LZ is secured and will mark with smoke.  AT 1630 hrs dustoff not available through ARVN channels, 2/14 requested dustoff through Saigon control, on the way, completed 1700 hrs.
72 1800 A Co to S3:  A Co reports that they see approx 50 people in rice paddy vic XS 729652, negative contact.
83 1945 A Co to S3:  Reports hearing two loud explosions, the most southwestern portion at a distance of from 100 to 200 meters.

FAIRFAX had 18 squad ambushes, LANIKAI had 6 squad ambushes.  Neg contact.

10 0710 4/9 Inf fired a 21-gun salute for the President of the United States and to celebrate the end of the New Year's truce at 0700 hrs.
12 0825 Second lift of B/4/9 going into the LZ and going out of the LZ vic XS782762 received ground fire, SA and AW.  2 aircraft hit.  One pilot WIA at 0820.  Gunships claim 1 VC KIA (Poss).  VC armed with AW.  B/4/9 element moving to check area. Ground fire believed to be coming from vic XS775764.
14 0925 B/4/9 picked up 3 detainees vic XS 782762.  One of them was pointed out by civilians in the area as being VC.
17 1045 A/4/9 blew one concrete bunker and found a 105mm round possibly booby-trapped vic XS 693790,  105 round will be destroyed.
18 1055 Report from 2/14:  At 1005 hrs 1/46 ARVN made contact with an estimated VC squad, firing SA and AW from 2 locations.  Arty in support, no casualties.
23 1135 1/46 ARVN lead element made contact with estimated 20 VC.  VC engaged ARVN with SA fire.  Fire was returned, Arty in support.  On the initial contact (Ref Item 18) the 1/46 claim 2 VC KIA (Poss) vic XS 754664.
25 1145 Last lift of A/2/14 on LZ at 1144 hrs.  The lift aircraft rec'd ground fire from vic XS722679 on lift off.  No hits.  Fire came from a house at that location.
26 1200 At 1115 hrs A/3/22 rec'd sniper fire from vic LZ coord XS 902742.  Fire was returned, results unk.
27 1210 A/2/14 has picked up one detainee vic XS726680.  Being held for interrogation.
28 1215 Ref Item 23:  2 ARVN WIA's being evac by dustoff.
31 1240 A/4/9 discovered (2) 60mm mortar rounds, (2) hand grenades, documents and 25 rounds .45 Cal ammo vic XS 690790.  All was destroyed.
32 1250 B/4/9 left a stay-behind patrol at XS773753.  Patrol was in position at 1200.  Patrol detained 3 personnel upon going into position.  Detainees evac to Binh Chanh.
38 1335 2/14 located 10-15 fighting positions and what appeared to be 2 AW positions that appeared to have been constructed within the past 24 hrs.  They were not destroyed due to lack of sufficient explosives.  Some torn VC clothing and tax receipts were found at that location.  Saturation patrols are being dispatched.
40 1400 A/4/9 captured 5 Chicom carbines in a house vic XS 690790.  Assorted documents were also found.  Bn CO spotted some personnel running into the house but when the ground element arrived the personnel had left.
43 1420 The detainee that was picked up by A/2/14 (Ref Item 27) stated he was a member of a 3-man VC supply team.  He further stated that C315 Co was located at XS725678 until 020300 then moved to west and dispersed on north side of river.  Man had 12-year-old girl with him, she is classified as innocent civilian.
46 1525 Delayed Entry:  A/3/22 found assorted clothing and medical supplies and 1 US machete vic XS 916748.  At 1322 hrs 1 platoon of A/3/22 found 2 barrels of rice and one outboard motor vic XS 915743.  The rice was destroyed, all other equip was evac.  The assorted clothing, medical supplies and one US machete was found inside a hut at the above location.
49 1630 1/46 ARVN Inf reported through 2/14:  Detonated booby-trap vic XS 737674, results 3 WIA, 2 litter patients, 1 ambulatory.
66 2400 One page of journal missing:  SUMMARY: 
... flights into LZ vic XS693790, XS 782762 and XS 784817.  2/14 Inf conducted joint BUDDY opns with 1/46 ARVN.  1/46 Inf moved by foot from Can Duoc XS757607 to obj MYLE XS 753667, then deployed to conduct S&D opns astride Rt 226 to vic of A/2/14.  3/22 Inf conducted Eagle flight with A/3/22 into vic XS 902742, neg contact.  B Co DS to 5th ARVN Airborne Bn, Co C reaction force.
PLANS SUMMARY:  4/9 Inf will continue FAIRFAX with S&D BUDDY opns.  Co B, C and 1 Co 3rd ARVN Airborne Bn will conduct an Airmobile combat assault to seal and search a village vic XS800776 at 0830 hrs.  Co A will be the reaction force.  The extraction is planned for 1100 hrs.  2/14 Inf Bn will continue LANIKAI with BUDDY opns.  Co A will conduct ops in their present area and return at 1200 hrs to conduct S&D opns vic XS 735720.  The unit will remain in the area until 5 Jan.  3/22 Inf Bn will continue FAIRFAX with BUDDY opns.  Co C will move by foot at 0400 to conduct seal and search opns vic XS 896776.  Co B remains DS 5th ARVN Airborne Bn.  Co A will conduct recon and patrolling vic XS8581.  The 51st Co, 5th ARVN Airborne Bn will conduct Eagle flights vic XS980833.
