B Co reports finding a hut with 3 containers loose rice, approx 500 lbs in each one.  Also 4 200 lb bags of rice, loc XS 677685.  Rice will be destroyed.

19 0845 Recon platoon:  Today's convoy has arrived at Binh Chanh and will be picked up by 2/14 Inf Recon Platoon and brought to Rach Kien as soon as the road has been secured and cleared.
29 1135 From Bde to 33:  There will be a warrant officer and an NCO going to your location for the purpose of inspecting weapons.  They will be at Binh Chanh at 180900 Jan 66 and go with the convoy to Rach Kien.  Inform the Recon Platoon Leader so that he is aware of these personnel joining him at Binh Chanh.
30 1155 From FO Co B to Arty LNO:  Arty FO Co B reports receiving fire from XS 683693.  Arty fire being called in on suspected VC locations
31 1220 Bn CO to S3:  Co B and Co C are receiving SA fire from automatic weapons from XS 685693.  There is more than one automatic weapon in the general area.  No friendly casualties reported, B & C Co.s are maneuvering to eliminate the enemy.  Further details will follow.  Bn S3 is enroute to location on C&C ship.  Enemy has been taken under Arty and SA fire.
32 1240 Bn S3 sighted a motorized sampan coming out from XS 685694 where enemy fire was coming from.
33 1240 Co C CO reports there are some wounded civilians.  Presently assisting two of them.  He thinks that there are some more in 3rd platoon area.  Some will need evacuation.
35 1300 C Co reports having 5 WIS and a dustoff is required, but doesn't want one at this time.  Loc XS 684691.  WIA's are as follows:  2 ambulatory and 3 litter.  Co B reports 1 WIA at this time, has leg wound and requires dustoff.  LZ secure.
37 1400 Co C loc XS 684693 and Co B XS 686692 as of 1400 hrs.  Co B had a total of 1 US WIA.  Dustoff completed 1355 hrs.  Co C had a total of 9 US WIA and four civilians.  6 of the US WIA were evacuated by the same dustoff that took Co B's WIA.  At this time Co C has 3 ambulatory patients and 4 civilians to be evacuated.
39 1445 From Bn CO to Co CO:  Helicopter extraction of Co B & C was cancelled as of 1445 hrs.  The companies will walk back to Rach Kien.
40 1450 C Co received sniper and auto weapons fir from XS 686694.  Fire was returned with SA and Arty.  Fire ceased.
41 1500 C Co received sniper and auto weapons fire from XS 686694.  Fire returned with SA and Arty, no additional friendly casualties.  Bn CO is on C&C and a light gun team is on station.
42 1510 C Co received fire from XS 682693, 683694 and 686694, fire returned with SA and Arty.  An air strike has been requested.
43 1540 From Co C to 33:  At present Co C has 1 additional WIA and 1 KIA.  This makes a total of 10 WIA's and 1 KIA for Co C as of 1540 hrs.  Location XS 688689.
45 1607 C Co to 33:  Requested dustoff for 2 US litter, 7 US walking, 4 PRU walking, 3 Civ litter, 1 civ walking, 1 US KIA.
46 1630 From S3 to Bde:  Co C has 6 additional US WIA, also has 4 PRU WIA walking.  The total of Co C WIA's as of 1630 is 16, the total of KIA's is 1 US KIA.  However at this time Co C has the following casualties at their location:  4 PRU walking, 7 US walking, 2 US litter, 3 civilian litter, 1 civilian walking and 1 US KIA.
47 1645 S3 to Bde:  Air strike completed 1645.
48 1655 From C Co to S3:  Request for resupply:  MG 3,400 rounds, M-16 3360 rds, M-79 560 rds, smoke 26, grenades 60, M-14 (7.63) E-type ammo 1300 rds.
49 1715 S3 to Bde:  Dustoffs for Co C completed at approx 1715.  'This included all WIA's US and Civilian and PRU plus one US KIA.
50 1715 B Co to S3:  Request for resupply:  7 PRC-25 batteries, 127 M-79 rds, 1 case M-16 ammo, 88 grenades, 600 rounds of ammo for M-60, 7 60mm mortars and 1 case of assorted smoke grenades.
64 1800 C6 to 33:  C-6 accidentally discharged weapon through right foot, injury not serious.
65 1915 C Co and B Co to 33:  Received 1 round of 60mm mortar from XS 692687.  No friendly casualties.  Co C received fire from a 30 cal MG from XS 696683.  Fire was returned with Arty and SA.
69 2045 C Co reports destroyed 72 bunkers, 71 2 & 3 man bunkers, 1 larger bunker in house, destroyed 12 VC grenades, 1 mortar round.  Vic XS 682689.  C Co reports 4 VC KIA (Poss) vic XS 682689.
72 2110 C Co reports at XS 696682 four personnel in green type uniforms and red scarves seen in house at this loc and later they received MG fire from same position, called in mortars, results unk.
75 2135 From Diamondhead element to S3:  Reports observed at XS 670690 1 sampan, took under fire and sampan disappeared.

Delayed Entry from Tan An 2335 16 Jan:  District Chief at outpost XS606549 was fired on as he went out with reaction force, - VC exploded command detonated explosion 105mm round.  Dist Chief and 3 others WIA.

14 0745 A/4/9 individual attempted to breach protective wire at Binh Chanh, was told to halt, tried to escape.  National Police pursued him resulting in 1 VC KIA (BC).  Individual was a detainee trying to escape.
17 0830 B/2/14 found (3) 500 lb containers of rice and (4) 200 lb bags of rice in hut vic XS677685.  Rice was destroyed.
25 1145 C/4/9 vic XS823763 found 2 rifle grenades
26 1200 B/2/14 rec'd sniper fire vic XS683693, no casualties, called Arty
27 1227 B and C 2/14 receiving SA and AW fire from XS665693.  Calling in Arty.
29 1250 Civilian personnel were wounded in the contact (Ref Item 27), 2 civilians were treated by C/2/14, exact nbr of civilians wounded not known at this time.
31 1310 C/2/14 has 5 WIA's (2 ambulatory, 3 litter) from SA and AW fire vic XS684693.
32 1415 Ref Item 27, 29, 31:  C/2/14 has total of 9 US WIA, 4 civilians, 1 PRU WIA.  B/2/14 has 1 US WIA.
34 1515 C/2/14 rec'd fire at XS686694 (sniper fire and AW fire), still receiving AW fire.  FAC is on station and fire is being returned.
35 1540 Clearance for an immediate air strike in grid square XS6869 received from Tan An.
36 1545 C/2/14 sustained 1 KIA and 1 WIA vic XS688689 from sniper fire, dustoff requested.
49 2020 B/2/14 rec'd one round 60mm mortar vic XS692687, no casualties.
50 2020 C/2/14 rec'd AW fire (est 30 Cal) returned fire with SA and Arty, results unk.
54 2125 C/2/14 had 1 US WIA caused by accidental shooting.  No evac necessary.
60 2400 SUMMARY:  1st Bde continued opn FAIRFAX and LANIKAI.  ASCC's remain established at Ben Luc, Binh Chanh, Rach Kien, Tan An and Gia Dinh.  4/9 Inf Bn continued joint opns with 3rd ARVN Airborne Bn center of mass XS6885 and 6884, forward bases are established at XS684851 and 698845 for RF/PF outposts.  2/14 Inf Bn continued S&D opns west of Rach Kien, center of mass XS6768 and 6869.  With B and C company elements made sporadic contact throughout the afternoon.
PLANS SUMMARY:  4/9 Inf Bn will continue FAIRFAX with BUDDY opns.  Co A will conduct local security patrols and base construction vic XS648850.  Co B will conduct security of B & C Co bases, and to conduct route security on Hwy 231 to southeast.  Co C will conduct security of Binh Chanh base and conduct Eagle flights on targets of opportunity.  2/14 Inf Bn will continue LANIKAI with local security opns in Rach Kien area.
