B Co reports the lifts of VCS have been completed, also there is a young boy with a lead foot, who will be coming in with his sister - would like for him to be taken to the medics.

16 0830 Gen Taylor with his party will visit 2/14 Inf at Rach Kien.  Will arrive at this location at 1000 hrs 24 Jan.
17 0900 From Sgt Nielson to S3:  Received approx 6 incoming mortar rounds (60mm) approx 75 meters from their position vic XS 740699.  Fire believed to be coming from vic XS 731701, engaging with 81mm mortars and twin 40's
19 0905 Bn CO to S3:  Reports seeing 3 sampans about 100 meters from bridge XS 737697, sent squad fro C Co, also sent 50 Cal to bridge.
20 0930 B Co reports reaching their objective and moving slowly searching area.
22 0945 From Arty 7/11 to S3:  Reports 4 VC KIA (Poss) and 4 structures destroyed at XS 712730.
23 0835 From 1/46th to S3:  Reports one PRU WIA from SA fire.  Condition not serious, has been released by medics.  XS 738694.
24 0945 From S3 to 2/14 Medics:  Checked with SFC Page and Bn surgeon on training circular No 61-1, H2 25th Inf Div, dated 14 Jan 67 pertaining to Co aidman course.  2/14 Inf Medics stated that they would be responsible for identifying newly assigned medical personnel (MOS 9E-5 and below) telephonically to the Medical Battalion S3 Section (Liaison 3).
26 1020 From 1/46th to S3:  Has 7 WIA's, 4 are critical and litter patients.  Dustoff requested.  Also reports 11 KIA and 3 WIA ambulatory.  LZ for dustoff is loc XS 743740.
27 0855 From Lt Blake to S3:  Reports 2 incoming mortar rounds landing approx 100 meters in front of bunker 17.
31 1105 From 1/46th Inf Regt to S3:  Reports seeing approx 15 VC at vic XS 737743.
34 1230 From Gun team (Diamondhead 25) to S3 Air:  The light gun team reports 6 VC KIA (Poss) as the result of their strike.  Also both gun teams recommend that an air strike be brought on vic XS 716730 to XS 717724.  Each team sustained at least one hit from the general vic of the above coord.  Further debriefing revealed that they had destroyed 4-5 houses and estimate 13 VC KIA (Poss) and also estimate a force of 30 in the area.  The lead gunship (Gunslinger) sustained 5 hits.
36 1246 From S3 to 2nd platoon, Co C:  What is your ETA of Rach Kien base camp?  Reply: approx two minutes.  Platoon leader was told to have C Co eat noon meal immediately and for Platoon Leader to report to Bn TOC immediately.
39 1305 From 1/46th to S3:  Informed 2/14 Inf that they will bring 2 civilian WIA to 2/14th location.
44 1345 A Co reports 2 US WIA from a booby-trap vic XS 757693.  Dustoff required.
46 1340 Ref Item 39:  1/50th ARVN found 2 civilians, one old man and one boy, vic XS 697741, wounded by the VC approx 0800.
51 1421 From S3 to B Co CO:  Be prepared to move on 60 min notice by air, assume entire base camp security mission.
53 1430 From FAC (Issue 01) to Bn CO:  The FAC reports observing 2 armed VC going into a house vic XS 693730 at approx 1430 hrs.
54 1432 B Co closed in base camp at approx 1432 hrs.
55 1435 C Co reports 1 US WIA vic XS 699713.  Chopper will bring him back to Rach Kien.  Happened as they landed on the LZ.
56 1435 A Co located a Chicom claymore weapon 16 1/2 in across and 4 in thick.  Destroying in place.
57 1435 C Co reports receiving sniper fire from XS 697710.  No friendly casualties.
59 1448 A Co reports detonating a booby-trap XS 775695, 1 man was injured in both legs.  Require dustoff.
60 1535 C Co has a heat casualty at loc XS 704722.
64 1700 A Co total number of detainees today:  10 males, 5 women
65 1707 C Co reports destroying 16 bunkers from XS 705723 to XS 707724.
66 1715 C Co reports receiving some sniper fire from XS 715727.
67 1630 UH-1D that sustained 1 hit in gas tank was extracted from Rach Kien LZ by CH-47 at approx 1630 hrs.
68 1800 C Co received a few rounds sniper fire, returned fire with no results.
70 1815 C Co is currently loc at XS 730722, reports receiving sporadic sniper fire from unknown location.  Fire is very ineffective.
72 1924 C Co closed base camp.
81 2020 From S3 to A Co:  A Co to be on 30 min standby for security for these grids:  6982, 6786.  Notified Capt Otjen.
83 2045 Delayed Entry:  From C Co to S3:  On LZ received AW fire from XS 697711, XS 699712.  At 1445 observed 3 VC running SW vic XS 695720, VC taken under fire with MG, negative results.  Large half-completed bunkers XS 700718, 1 incomplete trench system XS 700718, new two and three-man spider holes with overhead cover XS 706723.  Anti airborne obstacles vic XS 706724, bamboo stakes 3 feet apart, 1 1/2 to 2 feet tall through paddies.  Received ineffective sniper fire from XS 715726, 718726, 726728 and 729721.

B/4/9 ambush patrol at XS771763 rec'd 2 rounds 60mm mortar and SA fires, about 150 meters from their location.  No casualties.

Capt Fleming, Bde Cml Off requested 10th Cav Troop for 26-30 Jan for joint operation with 2/14 Inf.

14 0852 2/14 rec'd (6) 60mm mortar rounds just outside bn base perimeter vic XS740699.  Five coming from north.  2/14 engaging with 81mm mortars and M-42's.
16 0910 A/4/9 patrol GREEN sprung ambush vic XS608852.  2 VC KIA (BC) and 1 carbine captured.  At 0907 firing Arty XS663858 in support of ambush squad, reports still in contact.  FAC scrambled and sent to A/4/9 loc.
17 0940 1/46 ARVN rec'd mortar fire at 0850 hrs.  One company moving to secure road up to Cau Tram, rec'd SA fire vic XS743740.
18 0950 Arty in support of 2/14 opns claim 4 VC KIA (Poss), 4 structures destroyed vic XS712730.
19 1000 Ref Item 16:  A/4/9 patrol GREEN is still receiving sporadic sniper fire form vic XS663858.  No casualties.
20 1003 Ref Item 14:  1 PRU slight WIA from SA fire vic XS738694 treated by 2/14 medic and released.
21 1035 A/4/9 patrol GREEN reports VC broke contact, patrol returning to A/4/9 base.
24 1200 Delayed Entry 0850 hrs:  One company of 1/46 ARVN was ambushed vic XS743740 and sustained 10 KIA and 7 WIA.  The VC withdrew to the west and 2 light fire teams were called to engage.  At 1100 hrs 15 VC in the open were observed by gunships vic XS738743.  Taken under fire, results 13 VC KIA (Poss).  At 1145 hr gunships drew ground fire vic XS717724.  Pilots of the gunships recommended air strike vic 716730-717724 where fire was received.  FAC on station had flight diverted with 20mm cannons and will engage target.  Clearance was obtained from Tan An and also requested clearance to hit target with bombs.  Gunships report 6 VC KIA (Poss) vic XS717724.
27 1225 Ref Item 24:  Gunships operating vic 738743 estimate 13 VC KIA (Poss) from an estimated 30 VC armed with SA and AW.  One of the gunships sustained 5 hits.  No casualties.
30 1330 C/2/14 preparing for an air assault into vic XS698714 at 1400 hrs.  Co will sweep NE through wooded area to obj vic XS718724 and then continue along road to southeast to Bn base.  Est closing time 1800 hrs.
31 1345 FAC reported large nbr of troops and heavy ground fire vic XS685720.  Requested immediate air strike at that location from Tan An.  Approved.  FAC aircraft took 1 hit.  No casualties.
32 1405 A/2/14 sustained 2 WIA from booby-trap vic XS757693.  Dustoff requested.
35 1445 2nd lift of C/2/14 on LZ at 1430 hrs, rec'd ground fire going in.  1 WIA remained in chopper and will be brought to Bn base.  At 1430 hrs FAC reported 2 armed VC ran into hut vic XS693730.  At 1435 hrs 2/14 loc and destroyed 1 Chicom claymore vic XS757693.
36 1455 Delayed Entry:  FAC reported large number of personnel moving out of village vic XS688708 to the north.
37 1505 A/2/14 sustained 1 WIA from booby-trap vic XS755695.
39 1540 C/2/14 have one heat casualty at XS704722.  Neg contact.
44 1705 C/2/14 destroyed 16 bunkers at XS705723 to XS707724.
45 1815 C/2/14 loc XS730722 and receiving sniper fire.
54 2400 SUMMARY:  1st Bde continued opns FAIRFAX and LANIKAI with 4/9 Inf conducting local security and daylight ambushes.  B/4/9 commenced a 3-day BUSHMASTER opn with platoon base vic XS765755.  3rd Airborne Vn conducted an Eagle flight vic XS745865 with neg contact.  2/14 Inf conducted joint BUDDY operations with 1/50 and 1/46 ARVN.  Bn's in AO LANIKAI.
PLANS SUMMARY:  4/9 Inf will continue FAIRFAX with Eagle flights and BUSHMASTER opns.  2/14 Inf will continue LANIKAI with local security opns in the Rach Kien area.
